Quiet Riding — The Book

My relationship with horses has developed over decades of riding, studying the riding and training techniques of dozens of horsemen who lived in various centuries, and teaching and observing my own students. The more I have learned, the more I have come to appreciate the generosity of the horses who let us ride and work with them. In return, I seek to teach people how to deal with horses in the gentlest ways possible.

I believe that riding should be enjoyable for both the rider and the horse. If a horse enjoys his work, the rider will find riding the horse more enjoyable. It is the rider's responsibility to help his horse enjoy his work. In order to do this, riders must be knowledgeable about the horses they ride and know how to communicate with them. This communication involves both talking to and listening to the horse. While this communication may sometimes be verbal, it is generally visual and tactile. Just as it takes years to really learn to communicate with other individuals, it takes years to really learn how to communicate with horses. It is my desire to help my students learn to communicate effectively with their horses more quickly than they could learn otherwise.

Because I can only help a limited number of riders through my riding classes, I have sought other means to reach a wider audience. I set up this web site as one means of sharing what I have learned. But I wanted to go even further in my efforts. As a result, I have written a book.

In my book Quiet Riding, I seek to share more of my experiences and what I have learned through the help of others and through the help of the many horses in my life. I also seek to encourage my readers to keep striving for the ideal of riding in such a way that observers think they are doing nothing while their horse performs.
